Camping with kids can be great fun, particularly if you just want to go on a short weekend trip rather than going somewhere further afield for a longer getaway. Here are some tips to make your weekend with your little buddies a real treat full of exciting memories.

S’mores are a real campfire treat!

  1. Hunt for a campsite that's like a mini paradise – When I was little, my siblings and I used to go to ‘Forest School Camps’ which was great fun; I consider that ‘proper’ camping where you even have to dig your own toilets! However, if you are looking for something a little more 'relaxing’ (particularly for the parents), pick somewhere with bathrooms, cool ready-made trails, and maybe even a playground!

  2. Get those junior-sized sleeping bags and toss in extra warm clothes and blankets to make sure your little ones are warm and cozy.

  3. Turn camp setup into a family affair – let the little ones help pitch those tents or arrange the sleeping spot.

  4. Plan activities: scavenger hunts, epic tales by the fire, stargazing, and trails perfect for tiny feet.

  5. Safety first, my friends! Stock up on first-aid gear, keep an eye on 'em near the fire, and set some ground rules.

  6. Pack some entertainment: books, colouring in, toys or maybe tech loaded with fun or educational goodies.

  7. Let the kiddos explore but teach 'em to be buds with nature – leave no trace and respect the great outdoors!

  8. Chow time! Easy-peasy meals and snacks are a must. Don't forget their absolute favorite munchies! Camping meals for kids can be fun and easy. Consider these options:

    • S'mores and Campfire Treats: Marshmallows, digestive biscuits (or graham crackers in the United States), and chocolate for classic s'mores. Also, try roasting hot dogs or making foil packet meals with your sprogs’ favorite veggies/meat. You can take bananas and slice them longways, putting the knife just half way through the banana. Fill the gap with chocolate buttons and then wrap the bananas in foil and place them on the fire for a delicious sweet treat.

    • Simple Breakfasts: Cereal cups, porridge (or oatmeal) packets, or easy-to-make pancakes and fruit.

    • Snack Attack: Pack fruit, trail mix, granola bars, and cut-up veggies with hummus for quick, healthy snacks.

    • Lunch and Dinner Favorites: Sandwiches, wraps, or pasta salads are simple and customisable. Pre-made meals like canned soups or stews are convenient.

    • DIY Meals: Consider letting kids assemble their own meals, like make-your-own tacos or build-your-own pizza using pre-prepped ingredients

Make sure that your little ones only cook over the campfire with supervision, whether it's roasting marshmallows, hot dogs, or making simple foil-wrapped meals. Keep it simple, and if you have a portable stove or grill, it opens up more options for hot meals. And remember, involve the kids in the preparation – they might enjoy helping and feel proud of their camp cooking skills!

With these pointers, your camping adventure with the little ones will be full of wonderful memories!
