Introducing your baby to solid foods through baby-led weaning (BLW) is an exciting and interactive way to transition them to a more diverse diet. This approach encourages babies to explore various textures and flavours independently, promoting self-feeding skills from an early age. Here are some delightful recipes and tips for a successful baby-led weaning journey. I am not an expert, just a mum sharing the meals that we have given a go and that have worked for us!

Avocado Toast Sticks

Avocado is a nutrient-rich first food. Offer thin avocado slices on whole-grain toast strips. The combination provides healthy fats, fibre, and essential nutrients.

Sweet Potato Fries

Cut sweet potatoes into finger-sized sticks and bake until soft. These colourful and nutritious fries are easy for little hands to grasp.

Broccoli Trees

Steamed broccoli florets resemble miniature trees. Steam until tender, and let your baby explore the fascinating world of greens.

Soft Berry Medley

Offer a variety of soft berries like blueberries and raspberries. These tiny treasures are packed with antioxidants. Due to the round shape of blueberries, they can be a choking hazard so I like to cut them up when I give them to my daughter, or smash them with a fork first.

Cucumber Spears

Slice cucumber into thick spears for a refreshing and hydrating finger food. It’s a great option for teething babies.

Quinoa Puffs

Cook quinoa and form it into small, bite-sized puffs. Quinoa is a protein-rich grain that adds variety to your baby’s palate.

Oatmeal Bites

Mix rolled oats with yogurt and let it sit until it thickens. Form small, oatmeal bites that are easy for your baby to pick up.

Banana Pancakes

Mash a ripe banana and mix it with a beaten egg to create a simple, nutritious pancake batter. Cook small, easy-to-handle pancakes for a tasty treat. It’s a nice way to introduce egg (a common allergen) into your baby’s diet. I sometimes also like to make them with oats and cinnamon in there too to beef it up a bit. I cut my little one’s pancake up into smaller pieces and serve mine with some added syrup, yoghurt and berries.

Grated Cheese

Cubes of cheese can be a choking hazard so I like to grate mild cheese into a bowl for my baby. Cheese provides essential calcium for growing bones.

Yogurt Drops

Place small yogurt drops on a baking sheet and freeze. These cool treats soothe sore gums and introduce the taste of dairy.  You can mix plain full fat yoghurt with pureed fruit to give your baby a bit of variety.

Apple Sticks

Peel and poach an apple in boiling water. Once it is fork tender, take it out and let it cool. The apple can then be cut into pieces the size of your little finger and given to your little one to feed themselves.

Tips for Successful Baby-Led Weaning

  • Safety First - Ensure foods are cut into appropriate sizes to prevent choking hazards. Always supervise your baby during meals.

  • Encourage Exploration - Allow your baby to touch, smell, and explore different textures. This helps in developing sensory awareness.

  • Variety is Key - Introduce a variety of foods to expand your baby’s taste preferences. The more diverse the diet, the better.

  • Family Mealtime - Include your baby in family meals. This promotes social interaction and establishes healthy eating habits.

  • Patience is Essential - Baby-led weaning is a gradual process. Be patient, and let your baby set the pace. It’s about exploration and learning.

  • Balanced Nutrients - Ensure a balanced diet by offering a mix of fruits, vegetables, proteins, and grains. This supports optimal growth and development.

  • Stay Positive - Make mealtimes enjoyable. Keep a positive atmosphere, and celebrate your baby’s milestones, no matter how small.

Incorporating these ideas into your baby’s diet can make the baby-led weaning journey enjoyable and nutritious. Remember, each baby is unique, and it’s essential to adapt to their pace and preferences. Enjoy the mess and discovery as your little one embarks on the exciting adventure of exploring the world of flavours and textures.
